Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa 3.6.20

Araṇya Kāṇḍa, sarga 6: Sutīkṣṇa’s hospitality. The ṛṣi offers heavenly worlds and a forest home, Rāma declines a long stay because hunting the resident deer would distress his host

In the sequence: Rāma says that he would shoot the deer gathering there and that this might distress the maharṣi, so he does not think a long stay appropriate

But you might be pained by that — what could be more grievous than that? Therefore I do not think it right to dwell long in this hermitage.

Composed by Maharṣi Vālmīki, the ādikavi of the ādikāvya: the first poet of the first poem. Sanskrit: The Vālmīki-Rāmāyaṇa: Critical Edition, Oriental Institute, Baroda, 1960–1975 (gen. eds. G. H. Bhatt, U. P. Shah); IAST from GRETIL (Göttingen). Translation and word glosses: Claude Opus 4.6–4.7; summaries and sequences: ChatGPT Astra (machine-made). Numbering follows the Critical Edition, not the vulgate (e.g. Gita Press, valmikiramayan.net), so sarga and verse numbers can differ from those editions.
