rājā tu rajasā sūtaṃ dhvastāṅgaṃ samupasthitam
aśru pūrṇamukhaṃ dīnam uvāca paramārtavat

To the charioteer who had come, his limbs grimed with dust, his face full of tears, and wretched, the king spoke, himself in the utmost anguish:

Words: rājā — the king; tu — and; rajasā — with dust; sūtaṃ — the charioteer; dhvastāṅgaṃ — with limbs grimed; samupasthitam — who had come, arrived; aśru pūrṇamukhaṃ — with face full of tears; dīnam — wretched, miserable; uvāca — spoke; paramārtavat — as if in utmost anguish

Composed by Maharṣi Vālmīki, the ādikavi of the ādikāvya: the first poet of the first poem. Sanskrit: The Vālmīki-Rāmāyaṇa: Critical Edition, Oriental Institute, Baroda, 1960–1975 (gen. eds. G. H.
