Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa, sarga 85: Bharadvāja’s divine feast

Summary. Invoked devatās provide the army with food, drink and comforts, Bharata honours Rāma’s throne and sits as a minister

Sequence

  1. Bharata says the pādya, arghya and ātithya already offered is enough, but Bharadvāja wishes to prepare a feast for the entire army (2.85.1–4)
  2. Bharata explains that he kept the army away so its men and animals would not damage the hermitage's trees, water, ground, and huts → at Bharadvāja's request, he brings it forward (2.85.5–9)
  3. Bharadvāja enters the fire hall, sips water and wipes his mouth, and summons Viśvakarman, the divine architect, and Tvaṣṭṛ to make the arrangements (2.85.10–11)
  4. Bharadvāja himself next calls the rivers from earth and sky, asking some to flow with maireya wine, others with surā liquor, and others with cool water sweet as sugarcane juice (2.85.12–13)
  5. he summons the gandharvas Viśvāvasu, Hāhā, and Hūhū, the apsarases and gandharva women, and the attendants of Indra and Brahmā together with Tumburu and their retinues (2.85.14–15)
  6. he calls for Kubera's divine forest from the northern Kurus, with garments and ornaments among its marvels (2.85.16)
  7. he asks Soma to provide abundant foods of every kind, along with garlands, flowers, drinks, and meats. Bharadvāja completes the invocation through his tapasvin concentration, facing east with joined palms, and the summoned devatās arrive individually (2.85.17–20)
  8. a cooling breeze blows from the Malaya and Dardura mountains; flowers rain down, divine drums sound, apsarases dance, and gandharvas sing to the music of lutes (2.85.21–24)
  9. when the music ceases, the army sees Viśvakarman's handiwork: the ground has become level for five yojanas around, with grassy lawns and fruit trees (2.85.25–27)
  10. a divine forest and river arrive from the Uttarakurus (2.85.28)
  11. buildings, elephant and horse stables, mansions, archways, and a white palace appear, furnished with beds, seats, food, clothing, and clean vessels (2.85.29–32)
  12. with Bharadvāja's permission, Bharata enters, followed by his ministers and priests (2.85.33–34)
  13. seeing the royal throne, he honors it and bows toward it for Rāma's sake, takes a whisk-fan, and sits on a minister's seat → the others take their seats in due order. (2.85.35–37)
  1. At Bharadvāja's command, rivers with milk-porridge along their beds appear, with divine dwellings on their banks through Brahmā's grace (2.85.38–39)
  2. women sent by Brahmā and Kubera arrive, along with apsarases from Nandana; gandharvas including Nārada and Tumburu sing, and apsarases dance before Bharata (2.85.40–44)
  3. divine garlands appear at the maharṣi's command (2.85.45)
  4. through Bharadvāja's power, trees become drummers, cymbal-players, dancers, and attendants, while other trees and creepers take women's forms (2.85.46–48)
  5. the guests are invited to drink and eat their fill; attendants bathe, massage, and serve them, while the animals receive sugarcane and honeycombs (2.85.49–52)
  6. the army becomes drunk and merry, and soldiers cry that they want to go neither to Ayodhyā nor to Daṇḍaka, wishing Bharata well and happiness to Rāma (2.85.53–58)
  7. servants and soldiers receive fresh clothing, the animals are fed, and no one remains hungry or dirty (2.85.59–61)
  8. the guests find further prepared meats, rice, curds, sweets, pools of drink, bathing supplies, mirrors, combs, clothing, footwear, armor, beds, and fodder (2.85.62–73)
  9. marveling that the hospitality seems like a dream, they spend the night in delight (2.85.74–75)
  10. the rivers, gandharvas, and women take leave of Bharadvāja and depart; the men remain flushed with drink, and crushed divine garlands lie scattered around them. (2.85.76–77)
